Post Docs Matt Morison: Matt is a Mitacs postdoctoral fellow investigating carbon cycling, transport, and fate in Canada's forests under a rapidly changing climate. His work is in collaboration with IISD-ELA. Graduate Students Tyler Winsor: Tyler's MSc. project is looking at the impacts of climate change on soil carbon quantity and quality across subarctic and boreal landscapes. Karl Friesen-Hughes: Karl's MSc. project is investigating dissolved organic carbon (DOC) dynamics at the Institute for Sustainable Development-Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA). Carla Church: Carla's MSc. project investigates landscape controls on the distribution of Eastern Tiger Salamander. Undergraduate Students Keilan Ledger: Keilan's undergraduate honours thesis investigated how press vs pulse applications of nitrate influenced the accumulation of algal biomass and the production of the cyanotoxin microcystin as part of the LUGNuts program Izabella Robak: Izzy's undergraduate honours thesis looked at how Canadian perceptions of climate change differ among sociodemographic groups. This project was in collaboration with the Prairie Climate Center (PCC) at the University of Winnipeg. Bailey Pavcek: Bailey is a part of the Indigenous Summer Scholars Program and is working with Matt Morison on questions related to water quality in prairie and forested landscapes. Corey Sanderson: Corey is part of the Pathways to Graduate Studies (P2GS) program and is looking at relationships between temperature and stream dissolved organic carbon patterns. Lab Alumni Geethani Eragoda-Arachchilage: Geethani was a senior research assistant who managed the lab and investigated water quality implications of winter weather whiplash events. Chammi Attanayake: Dr. Attanayake visited from the University of Peradeniya where she is a senior lecturer in the Department of Soil Science. She investigated patterns of soil phosphorus in boreal catchments as part of the QEII Advanced Scholars program. Ahmed Lasisi: Ahmed's post doctoral work investigated how phosphorus in combination with different nutrients, will be exported from the spring snowmelt in different agricultural fields. He is now working as a researcher at Agriculture and Agrifoods Canada. Aliana Fristensky: Aliana was a research assistant from 2019-2021 and helped work on various projects including the LUGNuts project, carbon cycling at Turkey Lakes Watershed and building a database of moisture data for the Assiniboine River Watershed. Catherine Goltz: Catherine's honours thesis investigated the role of nitrogen and phosphorus in driving algal dynamics in eutrophic reservoirs. This project was part of LUGNuts, a network of undergraduate projects, in collaboration with researchers from multiple Canadian and American institutions. Udaya Vitharana: Dr. Vitharana was a visiting scholar from the University of Peradeniya. His work investigated spatial patterns of soil carbon in boreal catchments. Emily Kroft: Emily's honours thesis investigated sediment controls on greenhouse gas production from urban ponds. This project is part of LUGNuts, a network of undergraduate projects, in collaboration with researchers from multiple Canadian and American institutions. Dani Nowosad: Dani's honours thesis looked at controls on sediment uptake of nutrients in subarctic ponds. This project is in collaboration with Dr. LeeAnn Fishback at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre Kody Oleson: Kody's honours thesis investigated nutrient controls on greenhouse gas production from urban ponds. This project is part of LUGNuts, a network of undergraduate projects, in collaboration with researchers from multiple Canadian and American institutions. Alex Wiebe: Alex was an NSERC USRA student who investigated climatic and hydrological controls on dissolved organic carbon transport in forested catchments at the IISD-Experimental Lakes Area. Adrienne Ducharme: Adrienne's M.Sc. project investigated topographic and climatic controls on dissolved organic carbon export from boreal forested catchments at the IISD-Experimental Lakes Area. Jeremy Leathers: Jeremy's B.Sc. Honours project investigated nutrient release from cattails following freeze-thaw cycles. This project was part of LUGNuts, a network of undergraduate projects, in collaboration with researchers from multiple Canadian and American institutions. Hamza Amjad: Hamza worked on a project investigating controls on bubble production from pond sediments. This project was part of LUGNuts, a network of undergraduate projects, in collaboration with researchers from multiple Canadian and American institutions. Stephanie Higgins: Stephanie's B.Sc. Honours project investigated patterns of stream phosphorus concentrations in agricultural streams across southern Manitoba. This work was in collaboration with Dr. Henry Wilson at Agriculture and Agri-food Canada. Hailey Robichaud: Hailey's B.Sc. Honours project investigated the impacts of climate change on seasonal watershed flow patterns in the Canadian boreal forest. Janelle Laing: Janelle's B.Sc. Honours project investigated plant water usage in the Canadian Prairies by using stable water isotopes to identify uptake sources. Janelle was co-supervised by Dr. Genevieve Ali at the University of Manitoba. Alex Goodman: Alex's B.Sc. Honours project investigated the effects of temperature and hydroperiod changes on wood frog tadpoles using a mesocosm approach in Churchill, MB. Alex was co-supervised by Dr. LeeAnn Fishback at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre Marliese Peterson: Marliese was a senior research assistant on the Lake Manitoba ecosystem health project and led the writing of the final workshop report. |
